RHD, durch ein Calicivirus (Virus mit einsträngiger RNA als Erbmaterial) verursachte, seuchenhaft verlaufende und vielfach tödliche Infektionskrankheit bei Haus- und Wildkaninchen, die 1984 erstmalig in China beschrieben wurde und sich 1986-90 in Europa ausbreitete. Seit 1996 wird das Virus in
Australien in einem
Programm zur Eindämmung der Wildkaninchenplage eingesetzt. Die Krankheit verläuft rasch, und die Tiere
sterben innerhalb von 2 bis 3 Tagen häufig ohne deutliche Krankheitszeichen. Menschen und
Haustiere sind für das Virus nicht empfänglich.
